The question for today is...
What is your favorite song and why?
That's like asking a cat why it likes fish. Or asking a bird why it flies. My playlist is huge. When I first got my MP3 player, I was positive I wouldn't be able to think of 300 songs to put on it. Now I have to delete songs just to put twelve more on it. The list is pretty long, but not as much as one would assume. I have a song dedicated to each person in my life that's close to me, so I guess I'll answer that way. =)
I'll start off with the song One Wing in the Fire by Trent Tomlinson. The song always reminded me of my grandfather. It's about a man whos a little crooked, but always tries to do the right thing. My grandfather died when I was six, but I still have fond memories of him. Then again, there are things I still wish I could forget. I have a problem with holding onto things, like Sean pointed out, and I can't let those things go. They're what drive me to be better than I am. I still remember when I had Scarlotte fever when I was five...my grandfather wanted to stay with me on the last day I was there, and I told him no. I regret it to this day, because those are the last few moments I would have had.
The second song is Centerfold by J. Guiles Band. This song is epic on so many levels. It's linked to so many fond memories of mine. I always think of Brittany, a girl I grew up with. Five years old, in her mother's car, yelling at me for not singing the "nana" parts. I also remember how it reminded me of one of my ex boyfriends, because they used to play that song in band. I still think of both of them as very close to my heart, even if I don't talk to them much anymore.
This one is Never Let It Go by Story of the Year and also Where We Belong by Thriving Ivory. The reason I think of these songs is not only because of how awesome they are on sheer principle, but because they remind me of one of the greatest people I'd ever met. He's my awesome pen-pal, and I'm sure I'll talk about him quite a bit throughout this little social experiment. The first song reminds me of him because of the lines "let the music take control, that sound is beautiful, and I'll never let it go". It makes me think of how when he did play an instrument, he didn't play to be heard, or to be noticed. He did it because he just wanted to. And even if he doesn't think he's good at it, I think he's amazing. The second song is because we recently had a falling out of sorts, and there was a lot of tension between us for a while. There's a line in that song that says "no, it's not too late you know", which makes me remember that even if I think it's a hopeless cause, there's a reason I'm holding on in the first place. Both he and his grandmother told me "don't give up on him just yet", so I'm hoping. The other line in that song is "Don't fight it, we've been running for far too long, we're going back where we belong. So hold on, we got our wings and we're chasing the wind." Both of us forgot who we were in the haze of being teenagers. We both need to start climbing that long and unsteady path to remember who and where we're from. And though I know it's going to be long and arduous, I'm going to stay strong. We're gonna make it, even if it takes all night.
I'm also utterly in love with the songs Kyrie by Mr. Mister, We Didn't Start the Fire by Billie Joel, Like It's Her Birthday by Good Charlotte, and Love Like Woah by The Ready Set. The reason for these is a lot harder to explain, because it's not really about the song or the lyrics. I adore the song Kyrie because of the way he says "Kyrie Elasien down the road that I must travel". I'm strange, I can't help it. I love the song We Didn't Start the Fire because of how he says just that. Like It's Her Birthday is because of how they say "ayeayeayeaye" and "ohohohohoh"...again, I'm strange. Love Like Woah is not only because of the words "like woah", which I had never heard someone say before my epic pen pal, but because of the way they say "girls' got a love like woah, oh oh oh oh..." and so on. What can I say? I'm a strange duck.
I also like Feels Like Love by Vince Gill, because of the piano...and pretty much anything by Jim Brickman for his piano skills...and Barrage for their epic and insane violins.
